Whoever said 'meetings are the opposite of work' obviously wasn't a Fleeter.
Listen, I'm not trying to tell you what to do with your life but the latest arc of @funcityventures has a giant dying alien commandant who quotes William Blake, and a purple Pierce Brosnan with bugs for a beard. So, y'know... get in here!

[00:00:00] [ Intro Theme begins ]
> Molly Templeton / “Artemis”: [ IC ] In the far future, faster than light travel is possible via portals called stiffworks. Human and alien civilizations travel this way for millenia. Trade, war, and technology proliferate. Countless societies rise, thrive, fall, and vanish. Eventually, almost everyone forgets the secrets of the stiffworks... almost.
Three hundred years ago, the Worshipful Company of Stillfleeters is formed on Spindle, a space station of unknown origin. They send fleeters into the void using stiffworks in search of profit.
It is one hundred million years in the future. Welcome to Float City.
[ Intro Theme ends ]
[ Main Theme begins ]
> Mike Rugnetta / G.M.: Previously on Float City, the Saffron Anax — a powerful extradimensional tradelord in control of a pair of planets nicknamed The Lovers — asks the crew to investigate one Co. Archivist: Zeshdano Navelle. The Anax is trying to arrange trade with the provincial planet of Kakudun, and, through surreptitious means, has discovered this archivist is waylaying his plans. This he does not take kindly to, as a longstanding partner with the Co. used to conducting business as he pleases. Afeared of his threats to break his partnership and blame the crew’s rockside scuffle with a void-elf, they return to Spin with the Aanverder’s ransom of goods, where they are celebrated, promoted, and rewarded with an intern.
After some R & R, the crew regroups to formulate a plan of attack. First step, Vynos’ old mentor, Nioh Cymbalon, a Co. Archivist and fellow tremulant, who would love to provide access to the eponymous archive itself and reveal the location of Zeshdano Navelle, but can’t do so without the proper paperwork.
We join the team now en route to speak with Beta’s colleague, Ourndrim Saspareen, a fellow xenobiologist who lives deep in Spin in the Dormant Bays.
[ Main Theme ends ]
[ Ambient expository music plays ]
> Mike / G.M.: The crew treks from the innermost heart of the Basilikon, high atop Spin — whatever “atop” means — through the canteen, the flats, the Near and Far Bays, past Little Wetana and into the Dormant Bays. A place most fleeters know only by the dark tales told of it.
Here is the home of the mournfolk — the morghûl, in their own, fizzly, tongue. A group of informatic beings said to be the ghosts, somehow, of sapphire elves, resigned to mourning the fall of their civilization eons ago. What few of them reside on Spin gather here, amongst the stiffworks whose destinations are lost or not yet understood, in the dark, damp, mossy reaches of the Bays.
Ourndrim is staked out here, studying the mournfolk and, at the request of the company, keeping an eye on them.
As the crew approaches, a sparse bazaar comes into view. It’s dimly lit with strung up lights and small bits of tech here and there. Morghûl float around in small groups, their bodies made of two dense glowing bundles of filament twisted together, blue and white and shrouded in heavy cylindrical weave. Each mournfolk is two beings, two minds acting always together. Pairs sizzle and click back and forth at one another, their delicate features like that of a glimmering, haunting, marble statue. Soft depressions and protrusions suggesting a nose, eyes, a chin. It’s rare, but not unheard of, that fleeters would come visit the Dormant Bays; no mournfolk approaches the crew on their way to Ourndrim’s flat.
[ 00:05:12 ]
[ Ambient expository music fades out ]
> Shannon Odell / “Beta Commbot”: [ OOC ] As they walk through the area, she kinda whispers back to the crew, like: [ IC ] Now’s your chance, if you’ve ever had a question about mournfolk that were - didn’t know who to ask, you’re gonna have a chance when you see Ourndrim. This guy knows everything, ahahaha. This way! [ Mike laughs ]
> Bijan Stephen / “Remy Tester”: [ OOC ] Remy starts whistling — [ soft whistling sounds ] > Mike / G.M.: Uh -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy’s just whistling, he’s, like, unbothered by all of this. He thinks it’s very cool.
[ Whistling continues in the background ]
> Jenn de la Vega / “Merkis Imeldar”: [ OOC ] Merkis is at home, it is damp, and he doesn’t have to, like, hydrate. He’s just, like, y’know kinda power-walking behind Beta, but going very slowly ‘cause he’s not in the front, just, like: [ IC ] Okay, all right, all right, okay, okay -
[ Whistling fades ]
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, Beta takes you all through this little bazaar, through this grouping of mournfolk that are just kinda hanging out in the square, they’re in these loose groups, they’re all kind of roughly facing in one direction and you can see that they’re pointing sort of in the direction that you’re gonna go and there are a number of stiffworks that are on the edge of this bazaar, that are on the edge of their little town, and those stiffworks are decorated with lights and some candles and the actual surface of them is decorated with geometric shapes of moss, and a couple of them look like they’re a kind of altar, y’know, these are very - it’s like sacred geometry or sacred works of art. Y’know, you don’t know if it’s arbitrary but these ones are definitely decorated and it looks kind of striking in this dim light. You walk for a little bit, you go around a corner here and around a corner there and you come to Ourndrim’s quarters slash house, he doesn’t have a door it’s just a thick black curtain and there’s a piece of wood that’s bolted into the middle of it that just says “O. Saspareen”.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta sticks her head through the curtain kind of rudely - [ sudden curtain opening sound ] - and says: [ IC ] Ourndrim!
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC as Ourndrim ] Uuaah! - [ sound of something falling on the ground ] - [ OOC ] and he turns around [ Mike laughs ] - [ IC ] You startled me.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim I am so excited to introduce you to my [ takes deep breath ] THREE best friends! [ Mike and Nick laugh ]
> Mike / G.M.: He looks a little disappointed? [ Shannon laughs ] But also excited. So he stands up from his desk. He was sitting down facing away at the other end of his room-blob. His room-blob is, like the rest of the surroundings, very dimly lit, very cosy. It’s neat but packed full of books, charts on the wall, notebooks, all kinds of open ledgers, just, like, lots of research around. Not dirty, but crowded. Yeah, he’s got a bunch of lamps that are hanging, it’s kinda like a mini-study or mini-library, and he’s got a murphy bed that is shoved up on one side of the wall that has some books that are strapped to the underside of it, and at the bottom of it you can see a couple small musical instruments, like planks of wood with string on them, essentially, which is funny because he’s huge. Ourndrim Saspareen is an unhuman, which means that he’s, like, kind of like an eight foot tall human with four arms. The comparison that we made earlier that I don’t know if it made it on tape was: he kind of looks like Goro from Mortal Kombat? [ Jenn and Nick laugh ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: Right? It’s Goro, right?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah it’s Goro.
> Mike / G.M.: Except without the ponytail. I decided no ponytail.
> Nick Guercio / “Vynos Lysumptuara”: [ OOC ] Prince Goro. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: He’s got a long, shiny, gray jacket that he wears with huge holes cut in the sides of it for his extra arms, which are very very muscular. He wears these really thick glasses, they’re huge, they’re very round, they’re like coke bottle glasses, coke bottle bottoms, they’re - y’know half an inch thick, they’re very very large and, yeah, his cloak also has this big collar on it that just looks really really silly on him. He also has - his brain is on the outside of his skull, so you can actually see some of his brain matter, like, on the exterior of his head. So he turns around and he ducks very carefully in his tiny, tiny room, and he says: [ IC ] Oh, Beta! Uh, yeah! Um, yeah, come on in!
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim, I’d like to introduce you to my friends, like I said, they also happen to be my new team as you can imagine -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Whoa. New team? Whoa! You didn’t tell me you got a new team! > Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Well the other team... we’ll talk about that later.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh no... [ Shannon laughs ] That sucks...
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah...
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He reaches down and he pulls down the murphy bed so there’s somewhere for everybody to sit. [ Sound of springy bed being pulled down ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Vynos takes a seat.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is smiling wide. [ IC ] Did you say best friends?? [
Shannon laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yes, Merkis, I hope we’re at that level, I’m sorry if I, kind of, jumped the gun on that, but -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] [ Very high pitched ] I love it! I wanna be your best friend! > Shannon “Beta”: [ IC ] Awww. [ Shannon laughs ]
[ 00:10:03 ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Hey, listen, if you guys ever need, like - if you ever need any help in the field, uh, like if you ever go on any really cool adventures, like, you just - um - you know, you let me know. Like, I - if you need any help, like, Ourndrim’s here to assist.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim remember when I took you on that one mission and you got lost because you followed a sapient species into the woods?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Well -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] And then we couldn’t leave for three hours ‘cause we had to find
you? [ Nick laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] It’s just, how often do you see a mulruk of that size just not on Kakudun, it’s, like, completely unheard of. To be fair, I said that I was going - no one heard me - it’s fine... Yeah, I know, yeah you’re right, you’re right. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Anyway, we’re actually here - we’re hoping you could help us out. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Uh, yeah, I mean whaddya need?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Well, um, I mean I can tell you this, we got, uh, hmmm - into a little situation where we’re looking for some information on a fellow archivist.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh. Uh, who asked? Who - what do you need it for?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Um, y’know, just for - better we don’t talk about it. [ Shannon
laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oooh, like, this is like secret stuff.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah. Secret, secret stuff.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Okay.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Do you happen to know an archivist by the name of [ Shannon sighs ] Zesh-danno Navelle?
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Good luck, Shannon. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I know.
> Mike / G.M.: Zeshdano Navelle. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Zeshdano Davelle? Davelle? Navelle?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Noh-velle.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] [ While laughing ] Zesh-davel Navelle?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Jesus christ!
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I don’t have a functioning mouth. [ Mike laughs ] Or brain. Zesh-dunuh Navelle?
> Mike / G.M.: He immediately - he looks worried, immediately. You say the name and he’s like, [ Mike gasps ] gasps a little bit. And he goes: [ IC ] Um. [ OOC ] And he dances around, like, sort of -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim.
> Mike / G.M.: - gets a little nervous and he’s doing, like, a little bob and he’s like: [ IC ] What,
uh, [ Mike coughs ] what - uh, why?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He’s trying really hard to look cool. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ourndrim. You know - you are doing the hallmark of your species, which is to walk around in circles when you are nervous and you know you can’t get that past me.
> Mike / G.M.: There’s also no room in this room for him to do that so he’s basically just spinning in a little circle - [ Jenn laughs ] - like, trying to look - occasionally trying to lean on something and look like he’s not nervous.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] You know you can’t get these behaviours past me. You know we’ve studied each other - [ Cast laughs ] - enough to know that we can’t do this to each other.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] [ Mike clears his throat ] Yeah. I know Zeshdano Navelle. She actually asked me to file a bunch of reports about the fex and the mulruks and like a few other of the species on Kakudun that they have. Um -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Ohohoh?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - ‘cause she’s, uh, y’know, she’s working down there. But, uh - I mean, I
don’t - y’know, um, yeah. I know who she is, I don’t know anything else.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis casts insight - or, uh, Merkis uses insight to see if he’s telling the truth or not.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] You don’t even need to roll -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] I know - [ Shannon laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: - he’s definitely lying.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] - he’s definitely lying.
> Mike / G.M.: It is - yeah, tell me - roll it and I will tell you how good your insight into what he’s lying about is. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] 1d10, burning one GRT and - oh my god.
> Mike / G.M.: You rolled a one?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yes. [ Nick laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah he definitely does not know anything else other than - > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] At least to Merkis, yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: - yeah, other than, yeah he works with Zeshdano Navelle sometimes, she wanted some information about a few of the native species on Kakudun from him and he did that work. And when he said “I don’t know anything else” very hastily, and while looking at his shoes, those two things are a hallmark of truth telling. [ Jenn and Mike laugh ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis does not follow up. [ Mike laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta looks at Ourndrim and is, like: [ IC ] Ourndrim, remember I didn’t leave you on the planet by yourself. I waited for you.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Okay.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] It got one of our stillfleeters caught in quite the mess. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] So you’re saying I owe you one.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] You owe me one. [ Mike laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Um, okay. All right. So, I had to file these reports and they needed a bunch of approvals, and, um, there was a like bunch of follow up stuff that we had to do and for a while, for like a bunch of months, we were talking every day, you know, we were just - there were a lot of messages going back and forth, you know, like it seemed really important, and then she just kinda stopped. And I haven’t heard from her in a couple days. And, uh, I didn’t wanna ask too many questions, ‘cause you know, like, you ask a lot of questions around here, who knows what's gonna happen. People -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Right.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - people don’t like it when you ask questions, so... > Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] But you know we love to ask questions.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I mean - [ Mike laughs ] - I mean yes, as a scientist it is very important to ask questions - [ Shannon laughs ] as a member of the Worshipful Company of Stillfleeters it’s very very bad to ask questions.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] So you know, I’m sure you, like, I - you understand the position that I’m
in.
[ 00:15:05 ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] I understand, Ourndrim. What kind of - I mean, what kind of communications were you having? I mean, that’s all - that’s a cool thing to tell us, it’s not problematic to tell us. [ Nick laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He goes over to his desk and he just pulls out - [ drawer opening sound ] - like, a little mini terminal. Like, he’s got, basically, a small handheld version of what Nioh had. [ Typing sounds ] It’s not a, like, large, y’know, braided wire terminal to the archive. But it is a small informatic box that, probably, y’know, you at least - Beta - would recognize as - yeah, like a small computer that allows you to, essentially, send emails and read small portions of the archive that are made available to you as a lower level researcher. [ IC ] Yeah, I mean, we were just messaging back and forth about - I mean she had a lot of questions about the history of interactions between all of the sapients on Kakudun. She just - she really wanted to know everything that she could about how they relate to one another, the history of, like, where they lived on the continent, and, yeah, she just wanted as much detail as she could and, like - you know this, I mean I did a lot of that work when I - when, you know, when I was younger and so, like, I just - yeah - I had a lot of that research already done.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis shuffles up behind Beta and sticks his head out and says: [ IC ] Excuse me? As far as you know, do you know where she was writing from? Here? Or actually out there?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh yeah, she’s been on Kakudun for a while. > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] What do you mean, “a while”?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I mean, she - uh, yeah - she started out here, I think she was a refactor - well, I mean, y’know - she, like, used to be a witness, she went out on a lot of ventures - I mean, you know, she was like you guys. Uh, she, like, went on all of these, like, really cool adventures and, like, I dunno, she didn’t really wanna talk about it a lot. I, maybe, asked too many questions. Uh, y’know, I just - I got a little excited. She, yeah, she worked her way up to refactor and then applied for placement in a province and asked to be put on Kakudun, became, uh - yeah, got a position on the subcommittee for Kakudun, and, like, yeah, was doing her work from some of our outposts down there.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Hmm...
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Why do you need to know where she is? I mean, I would also like to know where she is. I mean, I - y’know, I wanna know what she’s up to and what this research is for. But, yeah, it’s weird, I haven’t - I heard from her a lot and then kinda not at all.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah, we were just wondering where she was because, y’know, we would like to ask her some questions, um...
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] But maybe something happened to her and we should follow that thread if she -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Oh, I’m sure she’s fiiiiine. Why - > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] - stopped talking to you.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] I’m sure she’s fine as well - [ Mike laughs ] - but I’ll tell you what, maybe it’s this interest of hers in Kakudun that has gotten the best of her - [ Nick laughs ] - you wouldn’t know what’s, uh - what that’s all about would you? Why would she be so interested in Kakudun?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Uh, no, uh - she never said why she applied to go there specifically. > Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Huh...
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I mean, to be fair, it’s a very interesting place. There’s - uh -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Ah. Yes, yes -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - a lot of different sapients - > Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Sapients. Yes, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - a lot of polities all, kinda like, pushed up really close to one another in a very small - y’know, like, Kakudun, it’s got that one big continent, so, like, all these different people -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Absolutely, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - have to live very close to one another. There’s also those two other
companies that are there, so there’s, like, there’s just a lot - there’s a lot going on. > Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Mmm.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] And you can remind me what are those two - I remember you telling me this before - [ Nick laughs ] - those two other companies - [ Jenn laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh yeah, it’s, um, Orthrax - y’know, Orthrax the -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Oh -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - yeah, they do all the indentured servitude -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Oh.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - and, uh, Aucher, who does all of the - kinda like, um - agriculture stuff. [FIX Orthrax & Aucher]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Oh, right, right, right, right, right. Those two companies - > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yeah, they’re on the east coast there.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] - oh yeah, they’re both on the east coast, right.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yeah -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah, yeah. I remember I was talking about those - and, uh, also we talked about - they’re, like - what’s their main thing they trade?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Uh -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] We’re always talking about this - [ Mike and Nick laugh ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] You would know Orthrax as, principally, a finished goods and arms dealer. And you would know Aucher, principally, as, like, food and supplies dealer.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Mmm.
> Mike / G.M.: You would also know Orthrax as roughly, like, probably a little bit larger. And Aucher as a little bit smaller. [ IC ] Uh, yeah, I mean - so, uh - I could, um - I could send her a message, but, uh -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] [ Unintelligible ] [ OOC ] And Beta kinda, like, turns to her team and, like, thinks that she’s speaking really low, but probably Ourndrim could hear her, like: [ IC ] Do we wanna send a message? Do we - we don’t need - we don’t wanna tell her?
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Uh -
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Is Merkis just shaking his head? [ Cast laughs ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is just shaking his head - Jenn the player, has just been shaking her head into the Zoom video. [ Jenn, Shannon, and Bijan laugh ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy says, in a normal voice: [ IC ] Why don’t we just go over there?
[ 00:20:00 ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] I think if we open a stiffwork, we might, kind of, tell the Company we’re kind of up to something.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] I have an idea but maybe we should talk about it later. > Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Mmm. Hmm. Ourndrim! My friend.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yeah? Yeah, yeah.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Wonderful seeing you. Before -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh. Oh, you’re going.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] - we have to leave.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Aw. Mmm-hmm.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] I would just -
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He looks genuinely sad that you’re leaving.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Awww. [ IC ] I would like to say to my friends, my new best friends, very very best friends, you guys have any questions about mournfolk? For Ourndrim?
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Yeah, why are their faces so cool?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I mean, there’s a lot of theories about how they've evolved the shapes that they have. One of them is that - [ OOC ] And he goes for as long as you will listen. [ Nick and Jenn laugh ] He just goes and goes and goes and if you don’t stop him, you could be there for an hour. He actually after a little while, he starts digging through some of his books, he’s like: [ IC ] Oh, and actually, I read this really great thing from a couple millenia ago that said that actually
what - [ OOC ] And then he starts, like, piling books and he’s not even really talking to you anymore -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: - he’s just talking to his desk and the pile of things that’s on it.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta does this specifically ‘cause she knows that by doing this, this is going to distract Ourndrim for - Ourndrim has already thought up of all these new questions that he wants to read on and that Ourndrim won’t even think about what we were talking about before.
> Mike / G.M.: And as you leave - do you leave? Do y’all exit?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Yeah -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] - backing out backwards, like: [ IC ] Uh - [ Jenn laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: Ourndrim, out of the corner of his eye, y’know, from his high up vantage point sees you all starting to escape and he goes: [ IC ] Oh! I guess we’re done - um, cool, uh - thanks for coming to say hi. Beta, if you ever wanna, like - y’know - eat some pieces of metal in Little Wetana, I can meet you halfway. [ Nick laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Absolutely, I will connect with you when I want to do that.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He does - one of his lower arms does like a very subtle little “yea”. [
Nick and Shannon laugh ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is just wondering out loud, like: [ IC ] When do you think the next, uh, mission auction is - ?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Hmm.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] - in the canteen?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well, it should be in a couple days time.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Perhaps, if we need paper trails for everything, perhaps we bid on a mission that takes us to the place we need to go.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Mmm.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Ahh, yes. That’s quite right. Yes.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Or, we talk to our friend Algar.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] [ In a gravelly low voice ] Right, yes. [ Cast laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: I’m gonna make that my ringtone.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Just that? [ Jenn laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ Imitating Nick’s gravelly Vynos voice ] Ohh, yes... [ Cast laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] We have to get to Kakudun. [ Shannon laughs ] One way’s through permission, through Algar, and one is through the cloak and shadow of another mission. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] So you’re saying we have to take another mission to do another mission?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Vynos has already turned and started talking to a stapler. [ Cast laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: Are you guys - what are you guys doing? Are you walking back through the Bays - ?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: - like, back up to the flats and stuff? Okay. Yeah, as you go through the mournfolk bazaar and the Far Bays and then Little Wetana - you get around to Little Wetana - [ chattering street sounds ] - and in the distance you can see there is a younger human that’s wearing a dull, kind of, brick red smock that is indicative that they are a page, they’re an archive page, kind of like an intern, and they’re kind of looking around like they’re lost and they’re spinning, and kind of, like, looking back and forth, they don’t really know what to do, and they turn and they see all of you and then start to make a beeline for you, like they have something to
say to you. And as the page approaches - it’s like a, y’know, maybe like seventeen year old girl with curly red hair - she says: [ IC as Archive Page ] Imeldar company? Right?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes. I mean -
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] She looks at Merkis and looks at Vynos. [ IC ] Imeldar company. > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis puffs up his chest, and says: [ IC ] Merkis here. Yes? > Mike / G.M: [ IC ] Gah! I’ve been looking for you everywhere, where’ve you been?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] You’re looking for me?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I’m looking for all of you -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh...
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - listen, Archivist Chragcht would like to see you in his office as soon as possible, please. [ OOC ] And she hands you a very small piece of paper that indicates a location in the Basilikon.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] And Merkis picks it up with two bulby fingers and is like - [ IC ] Ooogh - [ Jenn laughs ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Okay, don’t get it wet, don’t get it wet! [ Cast laughs ] [ OOC ] Remy grabs it.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Listen - [ OOC ] She turns around and she starts walking away and she turns around and she says: [ IC ] Listen, and if he gives you a hard time about being late, tell him that it wasn’t my fault. Tell him that I found you like two hours ago and that you were just dilly-dallying around. I don’t - I don’t need another demerit on my paperwork. We got a deal?
[ 00:25:16 ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] [ Quietly ] No. [ Jenn and Mike laugh ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Deal! [ A moment's pause ] We are absolutely blaming it on her. [ Mike laughs ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Yeah there’s no way we’re not... > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] This is a lie I can stand behind.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] She walks away. The piece of paper is like a perfect square, it’s a couple inches by a couple inches and it points to an address in the Basilikon and it says: Archivist C-H-R-A-G-H-T, Chragcht. Archivist Chragcht.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Shannon, would you like to say that real quick? [ Bijan laughs ] > Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Archivist Chragcht.
> Mike / G.M.: Nailed it.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Okay, that’s pretty good. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] All right!
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, Remy’s like: [ IC ] Merkis. Thank you so - you wanna lie this
time? Hell yeah! This is progress, my friend! > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Small steps!
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] My wet friend. Small steps! [ Jenn is squeeing IC ] [ OOC ] And Remy proceeds to counsel Merkis on the finer points of lying. [ Mike laughs ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Who is making a tea kettle sound about all this undue pressure now. [ Jenn laughs and continues squeeing sound ]
[ Transition theme plays ]
> Mike / G.M.: All right, yeah, you retrace your steps, you go back to whence you came, to another - again - maybe even higher up than where Nioh’s office was, up and down these stairs, down these long hallways in the black rock of Spin.
[ Transition theme fades out ]
You get to the office that is indicated on the map, and it doesn’t even have a door. There isn’t even a curtain, like Algar has, it is just open, you can walk right in.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Owwwh... [ Jenn laughs ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy just strides the fuck in. [ Shannon laughs ] > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is tiptoeing.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta follows.
> Mike / G.M.: Taylor, do you wanna describe the person in the room? Or - > Taylor Moore / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": Oh, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: Okay, great.
[ Inquisitive expository music plays ]
> Taylor / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": On the far wall of this, sort of, rounded cuboid you find yourselves in, is an extremely large tapestry that seems to be woven from some sort of biological material from a culture you’ve never visited, and it has examples of languages that you don’t understand and can’t understand. [ Mike laughs ] Because between you and this grand beige and green tapestry, there is - levitating, two feet above the ground - a large, rotund, human-ish, red headed man. And as your footfalls resound against the halls of the bubble chamber, he just simply rotates -
> Mike / G.M.: Oh god.
> Taylor / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": - in the air, the equator of his great belly turning like a planet to the sun to you, and you see that his eyes are simply not there. There are just two black holes in his head. [ Buzzing sound effect ] But orbiting his head, like moons around a planet, are mechanical eyes. And as his holes gaze in your general direction, the mechanical eyes stop their orbit and fix themselves on you. And he floats towards you at a leisurely pace. This is Archivist Chragcht. [ Mike chuckles ] [ IC as Chragcht ] Ah! You, my endlessly surprising little company, the Merkis cadre. Yes?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] And Merkis salutes and says: [ IC ] Correct. [ Inquisitive expository music fades ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Salutations.
> Taylor / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": [ IC ] Ohoho... You know I think of almost everyone here as a kind of child of mine, but from what I’ve heard of your little cadre, I must say that I think of you as the first among my children. Bully for you.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well, it is a great honor to be named thusly.
> Taylor / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": [ IC ] Oh, and there’s a greater honor yet. You captured the pistola of the Baas Aanverder. You know, good people - [ OOC ] And he floats very close to you, now, and even though he can’t make eye contact, his face still, sort of, hovers in yours. [ IC ] - You know, good people spend their whole careers hoping against the void to even see such a specimen. And most never do, even moster die trying. And then you come along with a basket of miracles... [ A moment's pause ] Not willing to give up your secrets are you? [ Nick and Shannon laugh ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] No, they’re secrets.
> Taylor / "The Cool / Interesting Characters": [ IC ] Well, who could blame you. Well, I mean we’re all wondering what could possibly have happened there, on Rigamont. Not only did you return with a treasure trove the likes of which we haven’t seen in a decade or more, what’s more, it was from the Lovers. To be a witness of the death of a Baas, and I believe I read in your report some sort of N-dimensional cthulicate? My goodness! To see that and then fill your cornucopia right under the nose of the Saffron Anax...
[ 00:30:38 ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] What can I say? We’re good at our jobs. [ Nick and Mike laugh ]
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ OOC ] Archivist Chragcht is looking at you intently, the orbiting eyeballs have sort of spread out, and each one is looking at one of you individually and you can tell that he’s looking to see what your reaction is after he dropped the name; the Saffron Anax. Mike, can I tell anything from their reactions?
> Mike / G.M.”: Yeah, why don’t you roll will and if anybody is going to actively try to hide anything, I would let you roll either will or charm, whichever is higher. [ Dice rolling sound ] [ Jenn gasps ]
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Eleven -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Yeah, my will or charm can’t go that high. > Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: - out of twelve.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah, me neither. But you can still -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Let’s see, hold on. Let me see if mine can. > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] - buy things.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, my charm is ten, I could try it.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I might -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] I could try it as well.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: You can burn edge too, don’t forget. > Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] My will is twelve.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] GRT. You can burn GRT.
> Mike / G.M: Burn GRT, not edge. Burning GRT, not edge.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] We can burn GRT. [ Cast laugh ]
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Oh! Shit! Shit! Shit! That’s the first time I’ve fucked that up!
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] That’s pretty good.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] That is the first time -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Hey! I did - it’s good actually what I did! [ Nick laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] So you burn three GRT for +1? > Mike / G.M: It’s three for three, six for six, nine for nine.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Oh, yeah. I wanna hide that we ever met the Saffron Anax, and I’m gonna burn three - I’m gonna burn six GRT.
> Mike / G.M.: And just to be clear, from what I understand, from what Taylor is saying, he’s not doing anything weird, he’s just -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Oh, he’s just looking at us. > Mike / G.M.: - like, capital ‘W’ weird. He is just -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Right. > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] He’s just looking.
> Mike / G.M.: - using his skill as a person, to perceive you.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Okay, I’m gonna burn three GRT then.
> Mike / G.M.: So yeah, like, he’s not - if he wins, if he, y’know, beats you, he’s gonna know that you’re not being honest, but he might not know - he’s not gonna have much, at this point, context for what you’re being dishonest about.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: If you are, in fact, being dishonest.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] So, burning three GRT allows you to have three more dice? > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] No.
> Mike / G.M.: It allows you - it gives you a bonus.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] It’s a plus three.
> Mike / G.M.: You can - yeah, you can burn three to add three to your final result, burn six to add six to your final result, and burn nine to add nine to your final result.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Well, I got a ten so - [ Nick laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: Ten total, or ten plus three?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I got seven plus three, which -
> Mike / G.M.: Got it.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, I don’t think Remy’s gonna lie, I think Remy is just like - eh, it’s probably fine.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Mmmm.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Well, Vynos, knowing that Beta doesn’t look very confident - [ Jenn laughs ] - that she’s gonna be able to hide it, and just knowing Remy in general, is not bothering to put on any defences either, he’s just going to try to -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Did you -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] - be as forthcoming as he can without being overly forthcoming. > Mike / G.M.: Sure.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Did you say it was will or charm?
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, whichever one’s higher.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: Or whichever one you want to roll, yeah.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is going to burn nine GRT. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: That’s funny. That’s like a very Merkis move.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah. Merkis is burning nine GRT and rolling well, so let’s see what happens.
> Mike / G.M.: If you weren’t already at full pool, I would reward you some GRT for spending extra, compulsively. [ Shannon and Nick laugh ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Oh my god, okay. Total of fourteen.
> Mike / G.M.: Okay.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis is not good at lying and scared to do it.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy pulls out his flute and starts toodling. [ Light flute music plays ] He’s not worried, really.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: You’re playing your flute during the meeting - > Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] He’s like -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: - with Archivist Chragcht.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] He doesn’t even realise he’s doing it really, he’s just sort of, like, doing it. And I think it would be very clear to the Archivist that it’s like a compulsive thing for him.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Vynos turns to Remy and gives him some eyes that say maybe this isn’t the best time for the flute.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy’s like: [ IC ] Oh, shoot - right, right, didn’t realize I was doing that. [ OOC ] And puts his flute away. [ Light flute music stops ]
> Mike / G.M.: Okay, so Archivist Chragcht - let’s go person by person - the robot, the shoodtha, it’s hard for you to tell because: no face -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Right, yeah. Mmm-hmm.
> Mike / G.M.: - but, like, trembling, maybe, ever so slightly? Is that fair? [ Jenn laughs ] > Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Yeah, what did you roll, Commbot?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Ten.
> Mike / G.M.: Ten. So, like, very slight - you’re like, “Huh, maybe she’s nervous about me, maybe I am just very imposing and this is a scary situation, I get it” but, like, definitely scared. The jalasti, solid as a rock -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Arms akimbo. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: - cannot get a read, one bit. Is, also, you would know, the banshee, so is the one that is the representative of the group and they - when you say the Saffron Anax - stone faced. One of them starts playing the flute which is, like - [ Nick and Jenn laugh ] - he’s, to be fair -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Yeah.
[ 00:35:06 ]
> Mike / G.M.: - he’s a sleeper, and you know what that’s like.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: Mmm-hmm.
> Mike / G.M.: And then - what did Vynos roll, Nick?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] I rolled eight.
> Mike / G.M.: You rolled eight -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Oh, I should roll. I can also roll. Lemme roll charm real quick. Just to make it, like -
> Mike / G.M.: Okay, so we have a number associated? > Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: And the older time guy - Nick, correct me if I have misread what you have described thus far - [ Bijan laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Yes.
> Mike / G.M.: - but, like, the older time guy is, like, looking at his teammates like he’s waiting for them to say something.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] I rolled a one.
> Mike / G.M.: You rolled a one.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, but -
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, I mean, I think rolling a one means you take your flute out and start playing it. [ Mike and Nick laugh ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] All right, great! Great! Great! So we have an in-game - see - now do you see how it - yeah. Exactly.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Amazing.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] You knew the roll.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Causality flows in two directions, my friends. [ Jenn and Taylor laugh ]
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: I think the flute throws him off - [ Cast laughs ] - but I can - but I think the eight is hard - I mean that’s exactly what he was looking for. Suddenly, all the eyeballs drift, very quickly - they fly, even - right in front of your face, Vynos, and just a foot away from your face, they sort of make a revolving, spinning, circle in the air. Like you’re looking at a ring. And then, the Archivist Chragcht floats sideways, he sorta strafes sideways until his face fills the ring of the eyes to you, and he says: [ IC ] Oh, so you do know him then.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well, I’ve heard tell, and through my gift and path, I have seen things that don’t always make sense, does that help?
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] And what is it that you’ve heard?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] The Saffron Anax understands the Eschereque much more than I do, and I believe he was tracking us the entire time we were on the Lovers.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] And why did you leave this out of your report?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] I have no proof, but the Weird speaks in ways that don’t always make it into reports. I apologize if any suspicions I had didn’t make it to the report, an error, I can amend them immediately.
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, he hasn’t lied yet so everything he has said has been -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ OOC ] Yeah, yeah. [ IC ] While that is not comforting, I must tell you that you’ve been trained very well, but from now until the end of space, write every suspicion in your reports, Vynos. Do you understand?
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes, yes I do understand.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] The Saffron Anax is a psychotic and very dangerous N-dimensional warlord that fancies himself a statesman, one of the whisperers, you know, is extremely dangerous and, like myself, is very paternal. I must say, I’m shocked he allowed you to return unmolested, or at least without an introduction of some sort. Perhaps his attention was elsewhere. Well, regardless, I just wanted to call you all here and tell you, well done. Even people at my level, and - dare I say it - those above, well, we’ve got our eyes on you. And I can see - [ OOC ] And the eyes float back out until each individual one is looking at you - [ IC ] - that you’re all going places. [ Nick and Shannon laugh ] That’ll be all. [ OOC ] - and he turns around, he just rotates and then floats back to view the tapestry, again.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Merkis salutes - [ Taylor laughs ] - even, y’know - ‘cause the eyes are still floating. [ Shannon and Mike laugh ] No, because - he may not be facing us but the eyes are still looking, so - Merkis salutes, and just about-faces and just hup-hup-hup out the door. [ Jenn laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: And you do not make it all the way out the door until you - because you hup-hup-hup directly into your refactor Algar -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oop.
> Mike / G.M.: - who is attempting to enter the office of Archivist Chragcht. He is turning a corner through the room-blob door without any partition in front of it, he walks directly into Merkis, stumbles a little bit into the room and goes: [ IC as Refactor Algar ] Oh! My! Wh-
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Ooh, ooh, sorry, sir. So sorry, sir. So sorry, sir. [ OOC ] And Merkis starts to rub the wet spot on Algar’s leg - [ Mike laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] And he’s doing the same, he’s, like, trying to sort of, like - > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh, oh -
> Mike / G.M.: - brush some of the mucus off.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] - oh, oh,Algar, sir, oh, oh no -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] It’s okay, it’s okay -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] - so sorry, I -
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - this should come out in the wash -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] - didn’t see you!
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - oh, boy.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta is a little bit seething in the corner, she’s like: [ IC ] That’s such a meet-cute, that’s such a meet-cute they’re having right now! [ Cast laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Algar - he’s standing in Archivist Chragcht’s office and he’s looking at you like he doesn’t really believe that you’re here, and, like, the beetles on his face are moving around, they’re chittering a little bit quicker and louder than they normally do, and he’s like: [ IC ] Well, this is quite a surprise.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] We were summoned here, sir.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] That’s none of my business, all well and good. Archivist Chragcht, I have
the report that you requested, I will leave it in the normal location? > Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] You will. [ 00:40:01 ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He walks over to where Remy is standing and he, sort of, looks at Remy expectantly, and he says: [ IC ] Um, you - uh - you’ll have to excuse me, just -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Oh! Yeah, sure. Sure, bud. Doc, how you doin’? Fancy seeing you here!
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yes. [ Shannon laughs ] Very - if you could please, just - could you step one foot -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Oh! Yeah, yeah.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] And Algar very carefully, looking at Archivist Chragcht, just puts the
paperwork on the ground where Remy was standing. And - > Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Yeah, Remy -
> Mike / G.M.: - leaves it, and then walks away.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy just walks out, he’s like - y’know - says hi to Algar, sees the papers, and is just like: [ IC ] All right, later y’all. [ OOC ] Doesn’t need to see anything else. [ Mike and Bijan laugh ]
> Mike / G.M.: Algar turns to Archivist Chragcht and he says: [ IC ] Um, just do let me know if you need anything else, and actually, it’s very unexpected and it’s quite a good boon, if the lot of you have a moment, if -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Algar. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yes, Archivist Chragcht?
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Algar. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yes.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Is this the most appropriate place to have your meeting with your subordinates? [ Nick laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh my god! Yes, I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. > Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Algar.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yes. Yes, Archivist Chraghct. [ OOC ] And Algar stands up straight and puts his arms behind his back.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ OOC ] And this is all without turning around.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Algar says: [ IC ] I’m sorry - I just - this is very unexpected - I’ve caught quite off guard -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Algar.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - and, it’s just -
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] Algar.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - I know, I know. Okay, I’m sorry. I apologize.
> Taylor / “The Cool / Interesting Characters”: [ IC ] It’s tapestry time. [ Cast laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Algar gets a very serious look on his face and looks at everybody and is like: [ IC in a whisper ] We should - we should leave.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Good-bye!
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] And he backs out of the room.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah, Merkis is just, like, tiptoeing out again.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ OOC ] Remy’s already out the door, man! Remy’s, like, playing his flute again. [ Flute music plays ] He’s just - fuck it - he doesn’t, y’know, like - I think he doesn’t really care about the seriousness of the situation ‘cause he doesn’t think that they’ve done anything wrong.
[ Flute music continues to play ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Just to be clear, I do not need to know why you were speaking with
Archivist Chragcht, is that clear?
[ Flute music fades out ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Yes, sir.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Yeah.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Fabulous. I do not need to know.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes. But you desperately want to. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I just - I do not need to know.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] I understand.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] As I was saying, if everybody has a moment, there actually - a job has come in for you, the Directorate is very excited to send you on another excursion and I would love to tell you about it at your earliest convenience.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Do we even need to bid for this job?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] No. It has been handed down for you specifically.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well...
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] ... Specifically?
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] More rare shit, doc?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Uhm, uhh... Unfortunately this one is something of a repair mission, uh -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Less interested.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] - though, I have high confidence that fleeters and voidminers of your skill level will return with no shortage of valuable goods.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Shall we go to your office? > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Oh, yes! Is now a good time? > Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] I mean, we’re all here.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] I’m free.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Ah, you’ll have to excuse me, I haven’t tidied up, but right now is great - [
OOC ] And you make your way to Algar’s office.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] As they’re walking there, Beta tries to make small talk with Algar, very bad at it ‘cause she’s very nervous - [ IC ] Ha - I love to tidy up when I know people are coming too, I’m such a tidy person, you should see my blob - [ OOC ] Is it called blobs?
> Mike / G.M.: Blob? Your room-blob?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] You should see my room-blob, it is - ha ha ha - tidy! To a tee!
> Mike / G.M.: Algar does not respond to what you just said, but he does say: [ IC ] Beta, I know you left a book in my desk.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Mmmmmmmm - what? [ Shannon laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] You are the only one I know who dots their ‘i’s with hearts. [ Taylor
laughs ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] So... do you have an answer to the question? [ Cast laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I’m not sure what exactly which question you mean, but I will say - Beta - this is a very rare edition.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] So you like it?
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I - I am missing the fifth printing, I don’t know how you knew - [ Taylor
laughs ] - it’s, uh -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Haha, how would I ever know that. > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] To be perfectly honest, I’m quite thankful.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] It would be a - you would have to be so crazy to look at someone’s collection and know they’re missing the fifth version, that would be - [ Jenn laughs ] - such a insane thing for someone to do...
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] You get to Algar’s office - [ curtain opening sound effect ] - and you realize what he means by, he hasn’t tidied up, is that the moss has just been watered and has not been dried. So he runs over and he towels it down a little bit and then goes to his desk. [ IC ] Okay, shall we get to business?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] What can we do for you, Algar?
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He reaches into his desk, opens up this drawer, it makes this, like, terrible screeching metal sound - [ terrible screeching metal sound effect ] - and he lays out all this paperwork on his desk and he says: [ IC ] Okay, so, the Archive, the Directorate, would like to send you to the ancient commerce satellite: Tsune. Do you know it?
[ 00:45:07 ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] I am unfamiliar. > Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Same.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] It’s the artificial moon that orbits Terra. It’s somewhat - uh, hoo - [ OOC ] And he makes a wishy washy, like, metz-a metz motion with his hand - [ IC ] out of time? It’s a bit out of time.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] You have my attention, what - [ Mike laughs ] - is this - we talking
Vynos out of time, or - ?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah, Merkis looks directly at Vynos. [ Shannon laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] So - yeah, technically speaking, Tsune - not yet constructed. But you might be surprised to learn - already abandoned, y’know - the ways of time are somewhat of a mystery aren’t they? [ OOC ] And he looks at Vynos and goes: [ IC ] Mmm.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] And Vynos says: [ IC ] Mmm, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Tsune - called Gnarcossa by its residents - is completely packed with edifices, every square inch of it is covered in building and it’s empty. In some hundreds of millions of years, the Snakemen will build this planet - this commerce planet on this artificial moon around Terra, and they will use it as a - yes, a shopping mall. Since it comes in and out of time, y’know, we deal with some difficulties now and again on Gnarcossa where - y’know - we
have the edifices but they are not yet used? Or they have been around for so long that they are now abandoned? So, anyways, the Snakemen aren’t there, they’ve yet to come. It’s uninhabited, except for a few groups; the monochromatic humans - a group of, well let’s just say unfriendly people who occupy some of the less developed portions of the planet - and the vat gnomes, so called for obvious reasons. You might know one or two, they make their way to Spin every once in a while - you all know of, uh - who’s the gentleman with the room-blob near the canteen that’s packed with goods? The gentleman with the curly black hair?
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Uh...
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] [ In unison ] Brandish Tam?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] [ In unison ] Brandish Tam? [ Jenn laughs ] > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Ah yes!
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Brandish? Yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yes. Brandish Tam - a vat gnome.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Ah, yes, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] What the vat gnomes do, you know, they subsist on the future ruins of the commerce empire that has been grafted onto Tsune. They break it down and they trade it, they sell it to whomstever will accept whatever bits they’re able to break off. And this mostly is fine, since the edifice is out of time, they’re not really stealing from anybody, they’re taking from something that has yet to exist or has existed so long that it has become useless. However, there have been some difficulties that have popped up recently, it seems - for some reason - large bits of Gnarcossa are being dumped, through a series of Escheresque events, onto various locations of concern to the Company. And it seems as though there are foldgates - there are gates of some kind that are opening, scooping up much of the building material from the commerce centre, and just, um - well, dropping it around. It says here - [ shuffling paper sound effect ] - these things - we’re having piles of detritus dropped in Calarash, you know, the very hot and wet planet, covered in islands, you know, the young colony Calarash. Gigou, which you might have heard your friend Oat talk about, home of the harajoon, very cool and wet, a moss planet. It says here that - [ shuffling paper sound effect ] - there’s some events happening in the west, in the mantid egg cities of Terra, you know, on the planet surface down from Gnarcossa around these large - the mantid egg-like structures - the rift itself seems to be centred around the prime egg, which is somewhat troubling as this is right on the border of the Formiri empire, you know, the ant people. The mantid people and the ant people are just now settling their tensions so, if there is
any unexplained phenomena, there is a chance that one will blame it on the other and - ugh - we could just be back in that bit of scuffle again. And the last location that is experiencing some of this is - it’s getting this detritus, some of this garbage sent to it - is Kakudun, it’s a relatively cool and wet planet - rather temperate - it’s third largest province of the company, dozens of competing kingdoms, again, a similar situation to the west, we would just love to avoid there being any tensions arising from unknown items just being strewn about, we don’t need people blaming each other for this. The Directorate had reached out after your last performance on the Lovers, they were very interested in seeing how you deal with a more open-ended problem, and also how you deal with the Escheresque, which, looking at your files, it seems like - Vynos, you might have something of a passing familiarity with, but none of the rest of you have ever encountered - is that correct?
[ 00:50:24 ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Yeah, Doc. That’s very correct -
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Never. Never.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] - never in my life.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh, yah.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] The Esqer-who? [ Shannon laughs ]
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] I would be excited to figure it out, though. You know, I’ve been asleep, I’m ready to try new things.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well, I - it seems like we’ve struck a bit of fortune in this time that we are presently in. I have just completed some training on speaking with steel and finding the actual source of unknown objects. I would be happy, of course, for the company if my - rest of my crew here would wish to take this mission to trace some of this - detritus, you said one of the planets was - what, Kakudun? Something like that? - Would be happy to visit and get to the bottom of this, for the company, at once.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Fabulous. So you are - I mean, not that you really have a choice, but I love it when you’re excited to do the work - you’re interested in the job. Great.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Well, I can’t speak for everyone but I can certainly speak for myself - > Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] I mean -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] - it’s not a problem at all.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] - Vynos, baby, it doesn’t seem like we can refuse. [ Bijan laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] I know, I just wish to make sure everyone’s voices are heard, I am but one man -
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] I love -
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] - and I can do some things, but not everything.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] - I love when we do this, I love it when we pretend that we have a choice, it really warms my heart. [ Cast laughs ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Yes, the illusion of choice. Yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Ah, so, yes - I mean, once you arrive on Gnarcossa, the job is actually quite open-ended. Go to Gnarcossa, find the source of the foldgates that are opening and scraping up bits of building and scattering around our provinces, and stop it, I suppose.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Oh, yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] If you’d like to take a look at the paperwork you are more than welcome. [
OOC ] And Algar hands over - collects up the contract and hands it over to Merkis. > Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Yeah. Merkis would like to read it comprehensively. > Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] Yeah.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] What would that roll be, again?
> Mike / G.M.: Roll will.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] So, Mike, with this job, would that automatically come with the
paperwork to go to all of the planets that you mentioned? > Mike / G.M.: You don’t know, yet.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: But he has - the only thing that he said so far is: go to Gnarcossa.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Gnarcossa. Yeah. Merkis rolled a three, which is not a success.
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, I mean, you still - there’s stuff on here that’s, like, clear. So, like, if you just spend time reading it, there are things that you’ll get. The requisitions language on this one is weird. The stuff that you can get from the acquisitions department - there’s, like, a lot of really dense language around it, and there’s a lot of things that you seemingly have to agree to in order to be given these items. And that’s, like, kinda some of the stuff that’s hard to read that you, like - it’s hard to parse through, but you can see - because there’s a lot of explaining how to use them - that there are two items that the Archive will give you so that you may discharge your responsibilities for this job. You will be given one Escheresque anti-nausea field generator -
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Oh? Nice. > Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Nice.
> Mike / G.M.: - and you will be given one foldgate stabilizer. And you can see in the paperwork it has diagrams of what these things look like. The Escheresque anti-nausea field generator is like a very thick bracelet, it’s kinda like a gauntlet, it’s like a black cuff that you can wear.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Just one of them?
> Mike / G.M.: Just one.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: And the foldgate stabilizer is a matte black ring that’s about half a metre in diameter that’s covered in long, sword-like, teeth. It looks scary. [ Nick laughs ]
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Does anyone else wanna look through this paperwork? [ OOC ] Merkis is shuffling and passing papers around.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Vynos rolled a one so he starts to grab - reach for it but then he gets distracted.
> Mike / G.M.: You get a papercut.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Aww.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] I get a papercut after that. [ Mike laughs ] > Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I roll a seven.
> Mike / G.M.: In the confusing language it also stipulates that because of the multifaceted - like, the many locations that you could, conceivably, go in order to solve this problem - like, you might have to go to a number of provinces - there are two contingency items that the company is - if you check the right box that is very very small - that the company is willing to give to you if you say that you have a need for them. And that is advanced exosuits for each of the people who are going on the mission, so each of you can get a slightly more sturdy exosuit if you want it, and each of you can also get a solar powered rebreather, if you would like it.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Hmm.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ OOC ] Nice.
[ 00:55:00 ]
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] And does it say anything about getting that because of having to go to certain planets? Or certain -
> Mike / G.M.: Yeah, it’s basically, like, if you end up out on the surface of Gnarcossa that you would need atmosphere. And while this job doesn’t necessarily require you to go out onto the surface of Gnarcossa, in the discharge of your duties, you may be accidentally transported to the surface of Gnarcossa and so if the fleeters who are undertaking this mission feel as though it is in their interest and the Company’s interest to be outfitted with the following items, all they need to do is swear that they will treat them appropriately and return them in good condition, by checking this box.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Mmm-hmm.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] I think - so Beta’s looking over it and she’s like yeah - she’s just
checking the boxes.
> Mike / G.M.: Okay, yeah. So you get some extra stuff.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ OOC ] Who knows where we’ll get spit out. Yeah.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Okay. So, overall, figure out what’s happening and fix it.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Yeah, just - so, our understanding - and the Archive tells me it will be very clear once you arrive - is that there are a number of Escheresque events occurring all over the planet of Gnarcossa and, once you are present, to figure out the source of them, and to simply stop it.
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ IC ] Hmm.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] And he’s going to - did you hand the paperwork back? > Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Yes.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He’s going through it and he’s like: [ IC ] Ah. Yes, I see that you have agreed to the exosuits and the rebreathers, yes, the anti-nausea field generator and the foldgate stabilizer, very useful and important pieces of equipment, we only have one of each of these, and we are hoping to be able to learn how to manufacture them, so please - we are expecting their safe return.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Doc, you can read this paperwork? > Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] It is my job to read this paperwork.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] I have written much of this paperwork. > Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Ohhh.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Aaaah.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] See, I was just wondering, ‘cause I can’t. [ Jenn and Mike laugh ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Why am I not surprised, Remy.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] Well, you know, the whole cryogenic sleep chamber thing really did a number on my brain.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Mmm.
> Bijan / “Remy”: [ IC ] But I can still play the flute! [ OOC ] He starts toodling. [ Flute music plays ]
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Ah.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Very nice. Love to end a meeting with a toodle.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] So, just to be clear, where are we allowed to go on this mission? Are we allowed to explore all the areas that have been dumped with refuse? It could help with my tracking.
> Mike / G.M.: [ OOC ] He - Algar is looking through the paperwork and he’s flipping around and he says: [ IC ] Um, there’s no stipulation - there’s no language which here that says you are not permitted to visit any of the locations where the detritus has been sent, but - [ OOC ] And he flips a piece of paper, looks at the back of it, looks at the front of it, looks at the back of it again, and he says: [ IC ] - they’ve only provided a tack-map for Gnarcossa, so I believe it is very strongly implied that at the very least that is your starting point.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Okay.
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] And I will point out, if you do - for whatever reason - need to address any concerns on any of the provinces, the foldgate stabilizer will do just that - it will stabilize a foldgate, such that it can be used.
> Nick / “Vynos”: [ IC ] Excellent.
> Jenn / “Merkis”: [ IC ] Oh.As a gate. [ Jenn laughs ] [ OOC ] And Merkis is just, like -
dawns on him like: [ IC ] Oh! [ Mike laughs ]
> Mike / G.M.: [ IC ] Anyways, yes, if you all agree, just sign here on the line and - I will just stipulate; out of time has a very particular set of impacts. So, you know, in your interest and in mine, be careful won’t you?
> Shannon / “Beta”: [ OOC ] Beta’s heart skips a beat, and she just smiles and stares a little too long.
